THE WEEK-Hansa Best Colleges Survey covered 11 disciplines—arts, commerce, science, engineering, medicine, law, business management, hotel management, social work, fashion technology and mass communication—in 18 cities across the country.
Data collection
A primary survey was conducted among 755 academic experts, 2,182 current students, 695 aspiring students and 84 recruiters across cities and disciplines. The sample was selected ensuring proper representation of 18 cities and 11 disciplines. Opinion of recruiters was taken only for business management and engineering colleges.
A closed-ended questionnaire was given to all stakeholders, asking to nominate and rank top 25 colleges in India and top colleges in their city. In total 3,716 interviews were done by the research team. Factual information collection was conducted in March and April 2013.
Ranking methodology
Ranking of colleges for arts, commerce, science, medicine, law, engineering, hotel management and business management was based on a composite score derived by combining the perceptual score for the college and factual score.
Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi, gets the top rank in arts, followed by St Xavier's College, Mumbai, and St Stephen's College, Delhi. In science, St Stephen's College, Delhi, is ranked top, followed by Loyala College, Chennai and St Xavier's College, Mumbai.
THE WEEK also decoded Delhi University's new four-year undergraduate programme, which has created confusion among parents, teachers and students.
Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, is ranked top in commerce, with Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi, and St Xavier's College, Kolkata, at the second and third spots.
Among business management institutions, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, is ranked number one with a composite score of 880. It is followed by IIM-Bangalore, (868) and Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, (801).
